Chez Max et Dorothea seeks individuals for consideration to serve on the Board of Directors. Chez Max et Dorothea is a new arts nonprofit dedicated to preserving the final home and studios of Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning in the South of France and promoting, celebrating, and generating dialogue between Surrealism and contemporary art at our Los Angeles headquarters. The Board of Directors (BOD) is the governing body of up to 12 individuals from local, regional, and international backgrounds who bring a variety of strengths in communal service to the non-profit organization.
Board members may include artists, art historians, collectors, administrators, financial managers, accountants, academics, lawyers, development officers, contractors, realtors, and more - all with a strong passion for the field of contemporary art and Surrealism at Chez Max et Dorothea. Chez Max et Dorothea is committed to developing and following anti-racist and anti-sexist practices and to adapting a non-hierarchical approach. This open call for board nominations is an intentional move to expand the existing board’s inclusivity, community engagement, and expertise and is intended to cultivate and proactively recruit candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences by engaging networks beyond our initial reach. If you have a dedicated background to the arts and are interested in supporting Chez Max et Dorothea but unsure about your commitment level as a Board member please inquire about our growing Advisory Council as another way to offer your expertise and services.
Qualified applicants will be considered for service by our current Board of Directors and President when vacancies arise. An appointed committee will evaluate the experience, skills, and attributes of BOD applicants against the current and future needs of our organization, and then make candidate recommendations to the larger board for a final vote. Applicants who do not meet the current Board needs will be kept in a pool for 3 years and are welcome to apply again at the end of that time. The Board is excited to consider all individuals who apply to the open call. Board terms are three years in length with the possibility of four consecutive terms. There are annual fiscal dues of at least $2,000 from each board member to assist with our annual budget, though this monetary amount is by no means restrictive to the position. If desired, new members can be paired with a mentor for the first year to help them learn the position and fully introduce them to the goals and infrastructure at Chez Max et Dorothea.
